A design system for a new strategy

Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) is a trading entity and joint-defence organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence.

The DE&S 4 year strategy outlines the targets for the organisation to remain at the forefront of the UK’s defence programme.

A strategy document, alongside printed and digital materials, was required to communicate the targets going forward for the organisation. I was assigned as lead designer for this project, working directly with multiple high-level stakeholders to create a new identity style that acted as a standalone product from the main DE&S brand.

Cover of a technology and innovation report titled 'DE&S 2025' with a futuristic helmet and the tagline 'Delivering the edge through people, technology and innovation.'
Open booklet displaying a man with headphones working in a high-tech environment, alongside text discussing "Accelerated Digital Solutions" and listing topics such as AI and Data Science, Capability Centers of Expertise, Future Business Solutions, and Communities of Interest.

Despite the Strategy booklet being the core document for the initiative, it would also span wide across a variety of materials over the course of 4 years. With this in mind, I created a visual system that would be used as a framework. Included in this was a new colour palette that expands off the core DE+S brand style, a new font system, and a lockup device that could be used where necessary to clearly display any documentation in relation to the strategy.

This flexible system allowed me to create a solid framework for the 64-page strategy document, one that is text heavy whilst also requiring many images and infographics.

A flexible identity

Open magazine spread featuring text about supplier management and a photo of a ship under construction.
Open booklet with two pages. Left page titled 'Our Journey,' features a timeline from 2009 to 2021 showing milestones and initiatives. Right page titled 'Our Successes,' detailing achievements in 'Great People,' 'Great Delivery,' and 'Great Place to Work,' with bullet points explaining various accomplishments and improvements.
A double-page spread featuring a timeline titled 'Timeline of Successes' highlighting milestones from 2018 to 2021. Key events include contracts, aircraft deliveries, equipment upgrades, and efficiency savings. Each year includes text boxes with brief descriptions and some include images, such as a military ship and an aircraft.
Open magazine displaying a double-page spread. The left page features a large construction vehicle and personnel performing operations. The right page shows people unloading supplies from an aircraft. Text discusses defense strategies and efficient operations.

Expanding out across print and digital

The design system had both print and digital in mind. Alongside the strategy document I created a series of corporate documents and social media imagery to communicate the strategy messaging. These included printed posters, A4 print-outs, digital PDFs and an instagram story.

Two posters featuring military themes. The left poster shows a person in a control room wearing headphones with "Accelerated Digital Solutions" text. The right poster depicts a soldier in gear with a drone above him and the text "Pace and Agility for Our Clients." Both posters include "Looking to the future - find the strategy on the intranet."
Three informational banners promoting DE&S 2025 priorities, focusing on people, technology, and innovation; client agility; and value to taxpayers and society. The banners include images of military personnel, a drone, and a child with an adult.
Three-panel presentation showing military equipment and strategy data. Left panel includes key figures and values of an organization. Middle panel features a fighter jet on a runway with text about achievements. Right panel outlines future strategies and challenges. Graphs and pie charts included.
Five teal icons on a dark background, depicting a radar, Wi-Fi signal, target with an arrow, network with nodes, and a parachuting box.
