A design system for a new strategy
Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) is a trading entity and joint-defence organisation within the UK Ministry of Defence.
The DE&S 4 year strategy outlines the targets for the organisation to remain at the forefront of the UK’s defence programme.
A strategy document, alongside printed and digital materials, was required to communicate the targets going forward for the organisation. I was assigned as lead designer for this project, working directly with multiple high-level stakeholders to create a new identity style that acted as a standalone product from the main DE&S brand.

Despite the Strategy booklet being the core document for the initiative, it would also span wide across a variety of materials over the course of 4 years. With this in mind, I created a visual system that would be used as a framework. Included in this was a new colour palette that expands off the core DE+S brand style, a new font system, and a lockup device that could be used where necessary to clearly display any documentation in relation to the strategy.
This flexible system allowed me to create a solid framework for the 64-page strategy document, one that is text heavy whilst also requiring many images and infographics.
A flexible identity
Expanding out across print and digital
The design system had both print and digital in mind. Alongside the strategy document I created a series of corporate documents and social media imagery to communicate the strategy messaging. These included printed posters, A4 print-outs, digital PDFs and an instagram story.
